Who is going to accede to the throne of The White House? We don´t know yet. We have our fond hopes, but no matter what, we should look to Him “who sits on the throne” (Rev. 7:15). This “look” will be a look of blessing and rest to you and me, and it will have a practical bearing on our lives.
I turn on the TV and watch the candidates fighting a duel over this and that issue. Then I turn on “the television” of the Bible, and what do I see? The fight is over, the battle is won, Christ is on the throne. “We do see Him (with the eyes of faith!)….crowned with glory and honor!” (Hebr. 2:9).
This very morning I turned on “God´s television” again, and again I read about His throne. I´m at the moment dwelling on the entry of “the ark of God” into Jerusalem. The ark is a picture of Christ and the presence of God. That ark “is called by the Name, the very Name of the Lord of hosts who is enthroned above the cherubim.” (2 Sam. 6:2). That word became another fresh blessing. What a triumphant position, never subject to fickle polls. He is on the throne above the cherubim, exalted indeed “above every name” (Phil. 2:9), nay, “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come…” (Eph. 1:21).
Behold, here´s the real blessing: We as His believers are on that throne with Him! I like the NEB translation of Eph. 2:6 which says, “….He raised us up and enthroned us with Him in the heavenly realms…” In other words, we share with Him His triumphant position on the throne.
How big are then the political issues? How big is The White House? How big is Washington? Ah, we don´t belittle them, and we do take upon us our responsibilities as good citizens, but we are relaxed, for they are all so small compared to the triumph we already share in Christ Jesus. That should generate smiles and enthusiasm in our lives along side with our compassion for the lost. Shouldn´t it? It did in the life of David at least. “David ….brought up the ark of God into the city of David with gladness” (v.12).
Do you and I know that joy of the gospel? Alas, Michal, David´s wife, didn´t. She taunted him and dried up herself, physically as well as spiritually.
His throne is there. It´s a throne of grace (Hebr. 4:16) and so it´s also a throne of joy also. David said, “O Thou art enthroned upon the praises of Israel” (Psa. 22:3), i.e. our praises of gratitude continue to raise a throne for Him wherever we happen to be in this world. What a challenge! Rejoice and rejoice again!
